Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.” Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.” This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.
Life was about to get difficult for this widow. That was, until Jesus showed up! But seriously, think about what this widow was about to go through had this funeral gone the course of a typical funeral. After the procession to the burial site, this woman would go back to living her life. And that wouldn’t be easy. Before her son died, she was a widow, but at least she had her son to take care of her. Now she wouldn’t even have that. With both her husband and son buried outside of town, day to day life was about to get very difficult.
But then, Jesus showed up, and this was no longer a typical funeral! He raised this young man from the dead, and then “gave him back to his mother!” What a blessing for this widow! In giving her son back to her, you could say Jesus gave this widow her life back! She once again had someone to provide for her earthly needs!
That being said, as beautiful as this story is, this isn’t the only reason Jesus came to this world. He didn’t just come to improve the earthly lives of a few random people. He didn’t just come to give this widow her life back. He came to take care of a much bigger problem than the day to day struggles this woman would have been facing. He came to take care of your sin and mine! And in so doing, he came to give ALL of us our lives back!
You see, without Jesus, you and I are spiritually helpless – far more helpless that this widow would have been without her husband and son. We’re helpless because we’ve been sinful from conception (Psalm 51:5). That means from the moment we were conceived, we never had a chance to please God with a perfect life. Yeah, you heard me right! We never had a chance! On account of our sin, we deserved nothing but death (Ezekiel 18:4, Romans 6:23). But on that day in Nain, Jesus gave a glimpse of how he would change everything. He gave a glimpse of his power over death!
A short time later, Jesus himself would die. He would give his perfect life as a perfect sacrifice to pay the price of the world’s sin. Then, on the third day after his death, he would display his power over death once and for all when he took his own life back up again – when he himself rose from the dead! Because Jesus gave up his perfect life for you, your sins are now paid for! You are at peace with your God! And thanks to Jesus’ power over death, even though our earthly bodies will one day cease to function and die, with his real power over death, Jesus will one day raise you and me from the dead! Yes! He will give you your life back! You’ll get to enjoy peace with God forever in heaven!
Thankful for Jesus’ power over death, just like you,
