Sand vs. Rock

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Matthew 7:24-27

In June of 2008, Lake Delton in central Wisconsin completely drained in 2 hours. I wouldn’t be surprised if you saw some of the gripping footage as lakeside mansions floated down a roaring river that didn’t exist only minutes before.

400 feet of sandy ground separated Lake Delton from the nearby Wisconsin River! When torrential rains saturated that sandy ground, the three houses built on top didn’t stand a chance.

In Matthew chapter 7 Jesus paints a similar picture to teach us a lesson. No one wants their house built on a foundation of sand. For obvious reasons we all want a ROCK solid foundation.

But, there are times is this life when we feel as though we are standing on sandy ground—times when doubts concerning everything we believe consume us—times when worries over family and friends overwhelm us—times when we feel as though we’re about to be washed away.

Your Savior is well aware of all the different struggles we face in this life that can often leave us feeling as though we lack a foundation.  The good news is, the Jesus who took care of your eternal destiny is the Jesus who offers you a rock solid foundation to stand on in this stormy life. The Jesus who has forgiven your every doubt and worry also assures you that heaven is yours! And he wants you to understand that the eternal rock he has provided for you is a foundation you can stand on NOW! You don’t have to wait till heaven!

So the next time you feel the storms of this life building around you, open your Bible to Matthew chapter 7 and hear the words of Jesus. Remember that you stand on the rock solid foundation he has laid for you. Nothing can wash you away!

Lord’s blessings as you stand on Jesus!
